How to Clean Ceiling Fans With a Pillow Cover in a Mess-Free Way?
The best way to clean the ceiling fans is one that is free from mess and with all the safety precautions to avoid any mishaps during the cleaning process.
Step 1: Gather All the Necessary Materials Required When Cleaning
- A ladder or step stool
- Microfiber cloth
- Drop cloth-Sheet
- Ceiling fan duster
- Old pillow cover
- Mild cleaning solution
- Soapy water (warm)
- A can of compressed air
- Vinegar
Step 2: Turn Off the Fan
Make sure the fan is switched off before beginning the cleaning process. Also, it's a good opportunity to check the direction of the blade because the clockwise motion of the blade fills the room with warm air, and counterclockwise makes the room cool, so adjust the direction as per your requirement.
Step 3: Prepare to Clean
Here begins the prep work. First, spread the drop cloth on the floor near the fan to cover at least double the area of the width of the fan, remove the light globes, if attached to the fan, and place the ladder at a level place for stability. Place the ladder in a place from where you can easily see the top of the blade.
Step 4: Clean Blades With a Pillow Cover
Using a pillow cover to clean the blades minimizes the flying of dust all over the room because the pillow cover directly wipes all the dust within the cover. Follow the following steps to remove dust:
- Spray a mild cleaning solution inside the pillow cover or a solution made of equal parts vinegar and water.
- Insert the cover on one of the blades gently and wipe off the dust from the top and bottom of the blades.
- Repeat the same process for all the blades.
- Then, slowly pull the cover carrying all the dirt and dust and take it outside. Turn the cover inside out, shake it, and wash it in the laundry for subsequent use.
- Wipe the edges of the blade to remove the leftover dirt.
- If you still notice dust and dirt on the blades, pour a mild cleaner on the microfiber cloth and gently wipe the blade again.
Step 5: Clean the Glass Globes
If the ceiling fan has a glass globe, remove it and wash it with warm, soapy water. Dry it thoroughly and fix it back.
Step 6: Clean the Motor and Pull the Chain of the Fan
In this step, clean the ceiling fan motor and the pull chain using a microfiber cloth. Spray compressed air to clean dirt and dust accumulated inside the motor.
How to Clean Ceiling Fans With an Extendable Duster?

If you don't want to get into the hassle of climbing a ladder or you have some mobility issues, use an extendable duster to clean dirt and dust from the top and bottom of the blades and also the base of the fan. This process lacks the finishing of cleaning done with a pillow cover, but it removes most of the dust accumulation.
Step 1: Gather the Material Listed Below
- An extendable duster
- A Drop cloth
- A hat and a mask
Step 2: Preparation
Start with spreading a drop cloth on the floor under the fan and around it; wear your hat and mask for protection from dust and dirt.
Step 3: Cleaning
Start cleaning the fan blades using the extendable duster meant to clean the blades at the top and bottom of the fan. Be mindful of the falling dust.
Step 4: Clean the Motor of the Fan
In the last step, clean the motor and lighting fixtures with the extendable duster as much as possible.
Method to Clean Grimy Ceiling Fan

Fans hung in the bathroom, kitchen, or patio accumulate more dirt and dust, which can be cleaned after spraying the cleaning solution onto a microfiber cloth and wiping all over the blade and motor, applying gentle pressure. If the cloth gets dirty, rinse it in clean water and repeat the process until the blade is thoroughly cleaned. Let the blades dry and then the fan is ready to use.
What Should Be the Frequency of the Cleaning?
You should deep clean the fan every three months, but try to dust it regularly. This will avoid dust and dirt accumulation to avoid health problems like asthma, respiratory issues and allergies.
