    History of NEC

    NEC is composed of an introduction, index, annexes, and nine chapters that cover everything related to electrical safety and regulations, such as scope, rule, and purpose. The NEC handbook has cross references and explanations to ease the understanding for the professionals. The National Electrical Code focuses on the requirements of branch circuits. It also specifies the minimum number of branch circuits in a location and the spacing needed between the receptacles in electrical applications.

    What is the Scope of the National Electrical Code?

    NEC is applicable to electrical installations for residential, commercial, and industrial purposes. The technical applications covered by the NEC are the installation of electrical conductors, raceways, and equipment. Installation of optical fiber cables and raceways. It is also applicable to signaling and communication raceways, equipment, and conductors. All these technical applications are applicable to the following:

    • Private and public premises that include buildings, structures, floating buildings, mobile homes and recreational vehicles.

    • Industrial substations, parking lots, yards, and carnivals.

    • Installation of conductors and equipment connecting to the supply of electricity.

    Why is Enforcing NEC Important?

    A place without enforcement of NEC is prone to electrical hazards and danger to equipment and to human life. A workplace that complies with the NEC standard has a lower risk element. At certain facilities, there is a danger to the lives of people due to Arc blasts, arc flashes, and shocks. Therefore, imparting awareness about the importance of compliance with the NEC standard is vital.

    In many jurisdictions, failure to comply with the NEC rules amounts to a violation of federal law, and the organizations found responsible may have to face criminal indictments.
